In Pashat Beshallach, all the Jews whine and cry that they have no water. The episode is known as Ma Meriva. Hashem tells Moshe to strike the while while HE (hashem) is standing on the rock. Comparing this episode to the later incident with Moshe erroneously hits the rock is fascinating. In the later incident, there is no mention that Hashem is present. All it says is that Hashem is there when pointing to the rod. No mention he is on the rock that will deliver the water.

The Shikker Dovid would like to suggest that Hashem is with us when we sin, but especially when we act together. Here all the Jews whined and moaned. They could have done better, but at least they acted together.
