Shmuel’s lesson in Humility – Eruvin 90

The great debaters of the Talmud, Rav and Shmuel discuss whether a boat needs an eruv. (see Eruvin 90) The debate is over whether the walls of the boat are for there for living space to be a “dera” or to keep out the water. A Rabbi in the Talmud asks Shmuel who does the halacha follow. Shmuel states unequivocally says, the halacha is like Rav (his opposing opinion)

What a great lesson in human relations and humility. Shmuel has his position, but subordinates his ego o his intelligence to recognize another person who is more authoritative.
