In the 1980’s the Shikkerdovid loved Cyndi Lauper. She wrote the poignant and eerily prophetic song:
Money changes everything
Money, money changes everything
We think we know what we’re doin’
That don’t mean a thing
It’s all in the past now
Money changes everything
On page 71a, there is a discussion about Mamzerim and genealogical issues. The Talmud says something startling:
R. Yeshua ben Levi said Silver purifies a mamzer, as it says in “he shall sit and refine and purify with silver” Rashi says they will be purified by their money.
While the Shikkerdovid is happy that money can care such problems. It raises a bigger theological question: What can’t money fix? Maybe more realistically, Why does money fix some things and not others? Can all the bad things or improper actions we take be erased with money? Can we whitewash our sins with checks?
Maybe this is what Cyndi Lauper means when she says “its all in the past now, money changes everything.”
