The Shikkerdovid loves Father day. It is the day in which our kids tell us by the gifts they give us (or don’t) how well we are doing. It is like our report card. This year the children bought the Shikkerdovid a T-Shirt with a picture of Darth Vader stating; I am your father. (attached above). Subliminal message? I think not.

Anyway, what does this have to do with the dancing chicken that does damage in the public way. Rav Huna says the you pay half damages, unless someones ties something to the chicken’s leg and then it gets caught and does damage. Then it is full damage. The entire discussion ensues as to why full damags. Does he create a “pit” where full damages is required?

More importantly, what does this have to do with Father’s Day. The truth is, not much. The Shikkerdovid would like to suggest something radical. The shikkerdovid would like to suggest something maybe a little from left field. Kids are a little like the dancing chicken. They are apt to make mistakes, act silly, break things. But this is their way. (rebel) It is expected that kids will make mistakes. The real problem is when parents (like the SD)saddle them with stuff. Burden them. Jam them up. Maybe the guy who ties the string around the chickens leg. We hinder them by weighing them down or “binding” them to our mishigas.

We should let the kids act like kids. We should expect the normal mistakes, the “rebel” acts. We should be careful not to burden them or tie them up with our mishigas. Enjoy the pic and Father day.
